About Domaine Alain Michelot

Situated in the heart of Burgundy, Domaine Alain Michelot stands out with its impressive portfolio of eight hectares of vineyards, primarily located in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The domaine also owns plots in Morey Saint Denis and a coveted parcel in Grand Cru Clos Vougeot. Of the eight hectares, over half are Premier Cru vineyards, reinforcing the winery's commitment to exceptional quality.

This family-run estate, led by Alain Michelot and his daughter Elodie, continues to embrace traditional winemaking techniques while introducing incremental improvements. Elodie's stewardship includes lowering yields and moderating wood usage, ensuring the wine's evolution is slow and natural.

The vinification process involves 90% destemming of the grapes, followed by a meticulous 18-21 day cuvaison. The must then settles for a month before it's transferred with fine lees to Allier and Limousin barrels. With roughly a third of new wood used, there is no racking for the next 20 months, yielding wines with very fine tannins. The wines are bottled filtered but not fined.

Each Premier Cru vineyard offers a unique expression of terroir, with parcels ranging from the higher-clay Vosne side, like Aux Chaignots and La Richemone, to well-known plots like Les St Georges and Vaucrains.

Domaine Alain Michelot's wines are lauded for their upfront fruitiness and ripe, fine tannins. The Burgundy Rouge and Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges are prime examples of the domaine's meticulous vineyard management and careful vinification, reflecting a deep understanding of the terroir. These wines are celebrated for their powerful aromas, wonderful textures, and complex flavors of blackberry, blackcurrant, and smoke.

Despite its under-the-radar status in the U.S., Domaine Alain Michelot is recognized as a top producer in France, making their wines an excellent choice for those seeking to explore the depths of Burgundy.
