About Patrick Jasmin

Domaine Jasmin, located in the renowned Côte-Rôtie appellation of the Northern Rhône, has been an emblematic producer for over a century, revered by enthusiasts who appreciate the finesse and elegance of Côte-Rôtie wines. Steeped in tradition, the philosophy of winemaking at Domaine Jasmin has been passed down through four generations, resulting in wines of exceptional quality.

At the heart of Domaine Jasmin is their flagship Côte-Rôtie, a wine that showcases the family's dedication to their craft. For many years, they crafted a single Côte-Rôtie blend from their eight lieux-dits, distinguishing themselves as one of the few estates to do so. This blend, enriched by a small proportion of Viognier, imparts a captivating floral perfume to the wine. The assemblage artfully combines the elegance derived from the granite soils of Coteaux de Tupin and Côte Blonde with the potent intensity of Sérine vines from the Brune sector's Moutonnes and Côte Baudin, dating back to the 1920s.

Tradition has long been cherished at Domaine Jasmin, evident in their winemaking practices. Previously, whole-cluster fermentation with submerged caps held by planks was favored, and aging predominantly took place in neutral pièce and demi-muid barrels. Although some changes have occurred since Patrick Jasmin took over winemaking duties after the untimely passing of his father in 1999, the essence of their approach remains intact. Notably, all grapes are now destemmed, while the submerged cap technique and restrained use of new barrels continue to define their winemaking style.

Patrick Jasmin's unwavering commitment to tradition and terroir is evident in their vineyard practices. Situated on the famed terraces of Côte-Rôtie, the estate encompasses eleven parcels spread across eight lieux-dits, spanning a mere five hectares. Cultivating these treacherous terraces requires back-breaking labor, and everything, except punch-downs which are done by foot, is meticulously executed by hand. The vineyards, planted predominantly with Syrah and a touch of Viognier, thrive on the sun-drenched slopes that boast mineral-rich soils, ranging from schist and granite to clay, gneiss, and limestone.

In the cellar, Patrick Jasmin upholds their time-honored techniques. Each parcel is vinified separately, allowing for precise attention to its unique characteristics. A twenty to twenty-two-day maceration period, with regular punch-downs and pump-overs, extracts optimal flavors from the skins. The Viognier and Syrah undergo co-fermentation in traditional cement tanks, infusing the wine with captivating aromatics. Following primary fermentation and malolactic conversion, the wine is aged in a combination of Burgundian barrels and demi-muids, with a modest percentage of new oak ranging from 25% to 30%. After maturing for twenty-four months, the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, ensuring their pure expression.

Domaine Jasmin's wines stand as faithful ambassadors of the unique character of Côte-Rôtie. Balancing grace and complexity, these exceptional wines can be enjoyed in their youth while gaining further nuance and depth with cellaring. With their unwavering commitment to tradition and respect for the land, Domaine Jasmin continues to craft wines that captivate the senses and showcase the remarkable terroir of Côte-Rôtie.
