About Clos Rougeard (Foucault)
Brothers Nadi and Charly Foucault are the eighth generation of their family to produce Saumur-Champigny’s legendary Clos Rougeard. Since taking over the 10-hectare estate in 1969, they have pioneered natural and biodynamic farming methods, serving as an inspiration for many young growers around the world. With an exacting adherence to family tradition, the brothers have distinguished themselves as masters of Chacé’s old-vine, single vineyard Cabernet Francs.
To call the Foucault’s wines cult classics is an understatement. Their vines get absurdly low yields, often as little as 25 hl/ha, and all of their work in the vineyards is done by hand. Their cellars, an underground maze of tuffeau-carved tunnels, create an ideal climate for their long aging wines. Nadi and Charly ferment the wines in cement cuves, with daily punch-downs, occasionally by foot. They then rack the wines to barrels, where they undergo malolactic fermentation and age for up to 24 months. After an unfined and unfiltered bottling, they allow the wines to rest for another year before release. Aromatic, intense and incredibly age-worthy, the wines of Clos Rougeard are a prize for any great collector.
