Luis Rodriguez Vazquez in the vineyard

About Luis A. Rodriguez Vazquez

Luis A. Rodriguez Vazquez, established in 1988, has proven a revitalizing influence in the often-overlooked Ribeiro region, close to Portugal. His steadfast dedication has been instrumental in reinstating the historical prominence of Ribeiro by replacing Franco-era plantings of palomino and alicante bouchet with the region's indigenous varieties. With this, he has demonstrated their potential to create remarkable, age-worthy wines.

The winery's commitment to varietals, such as Treixadura, Brancellao, and others, has resulted in complex and multidimensional wines that continue to reveal their depth over decades. With just under six hectares dispersed across roughly 200 plots, the winery produces a little over 2000 cases. Key to his portfolio is A Teixa, a single vineyard wine primarily composed of Treixadura, supported by Godello and Albarino, offering a well-rounded, mineral, and refined introduction to his white wines.

Furthermore, Rodriguez's Escolma, a reserve wine produced only in the best years, uses grapes from the steepest, oldest Treixadura parcels, lending it a unique profile framed by ripe citrus, sea spray, and fine acidity. The red counterpart, A Torna Dos Pasas Escolma, a field blend from his lowest-yielding old vines, predominantly Brancellao and Caino, shows structure and elegance. Of the same mold, the Dos Pasas, a red wine fermented in steel and aged in large old oak barrels, is a lighter, bright, and floral expression with granitic spice.

All wines are naturally fermented, with the whites aged on the lees for a year and given additional bottle aging before release. The reds, fermented in larger barrels with some whole clusters, age for a minimum of one year in oak and three more in the bottle.

In all, Rodriguez's methodical approach and innovative styles have provided Ribeiro with a new identity and set a benchmark for other producers to follow. His offerings, echoing the region's unique terroir, are complex, nuanced, and a worthwhile exploration for any wine enthusiast.
