About 4 Monos

4 Monos, or 4 Monkeys, is an emblem of The New Spain's wine revolution. The founders - a foursome of friends who share an appreciation for wine and the great outdoors - initiated their venture on a hike in the breathtaking Gredos Mountains. Their unique meeting place, 80km west of Madrid, laid the foundation for their winery, highlighting the pivotal role the strikingly diverse Gredos terroir plays in their wines.

Positioned at altitudes between 600 and 1200 meters, the Sierra de Gredos straddles the Méntrida, Vinos de Madrid, and Castilla y León appellations. This fascinating landscape intertwines old bush vines rooted in sand, granite, and schist with a variety of aromatic trees and wildflowers, creating a magnificent fusion of Mediterranean and Alpine atmospheres.

4 Monos, composed of winemakers Javier and Laura García, vino-enthusiast David Velasco, and vineyard owner David Moreno, embraced this captivating terroir with their organic farming principles. Since their first vintage in 2010, they have not only revived underappreciated grapes like Morenillo and Cariñena but also introduced the world to the exceptional potential of Gredos wines, courtesy of their scrupulous attention to the land's varied terroir.

The winemaking philosophy of 4 Monos is one of minimalistic elegance. They treat their white wines to a delicate barrel fermentation and maturation in neutral French oak. The wines, whether a regional blanco blend from old-vine Albillo with Viura and Moscatel or a richly aromatic Albillo from 95-year-old vines display a captivating crystalline texture.

The red wines, chiefly from Garnacha, Cariñena, and Morenillo, are picked at initial ripeness and then vinified using whole grape clusters, gentle extraction, and aged in neutral oak. Their portfolio includes a regional Gredos red, a complex wine from the high-altitude village of Cenicientos, and two single-vineyard offerings under the La Danza del Viento label. The Molino Quemado from San Martín de Valdeiglesias is structured and mineral-rich, while the La Isilla from Cadalso de los Vidrios is more aromatic and elegant. The Cariñena grape takes center stage in their Car wine, a precise, elegant single-vineyard offering.

The wines embody their creators' adventurous spirit, respect for the land, and determination to challenge conventional winemaking practices. Every bottle tells a story of the mountains they traverse, the villages they explore, and the vineyards they cultivate. This fusion of the people, the land, and the spirit of the Gredos region results in wines that resonate with intense aromatics, balance, and freshness, alongside a telltale granitic backbone. Undeniably, 4 Monos represents a testament to the power of organic farming and the new wave of Spanish winemaking.
