2018 Brendan Stater-West Saumur Blanc Les Chapaudaises #167272595
Reviews 90 points Wine Advocate "...the intensely golden-yellow 2018 opens with an elegant, ripe and concentrated yet pure, fresh and slightly flinty bouquet with lovely brioche aromas from the extended less aging. Elegant, pure and fresh on the palate, this is a mineral-driven Chenin from younger vines and exceptional terroir. The finish is complex and tensioned as well as very long and intense. (SR)"

About Brendan Stater-West
Les Chapaudaises, located a half-kilometer from the famous butte of Brézé on a slightly elevated slope, has composed of tuffeau limestone soil with calcium-rich clay and sand and a plentiful supply of seashell fossils - originating from the Cretaceous Era, making it great white wine soil. Interestingly, tuffeau also provides good structure for masonry, which is evident in the town of Saumur, most of whose buildings are made with these tuffeau rocks.
Saumur is a broad appellation that immediately abuts the southern border of the more famous red-wine appellation, Saumur-Champigny. Brendan’s hectare in Bizay has unique expressions of Chenin Blanc that stand out from other wines produced in the region. His vineyard holdings and winemaking practices make his wines particularly noteworthy. Brendan’s winemaking process includes hand-harvesting, natural fermentation, and aging in neutral oak. His wines have pure and vertical style, with salinity and minerality that showcase the limestone terroir. His first vintage is considered by many to be exceptional and impressive, which is an indicator of his potential as a terrific vigneron.
