Reviews 94-96 points Vinous "It is divine on the nose, offering pixelated red berry fruit mixed with oyster shell and limestone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins, perfect acidity and more freshness and tension than it knows what to do with. This is a sleek, wonderfully proportioned Gevrey that will age effortlessly. (NM)" 94 points John Gilman "The overtly sauvage and liqueur-like aromas speak of red and black raspberry, poached plum and plenty of earth character. There is excellent volume and richness to the seductively textured medium weight plus flavors that coat the palate with dry extract while exhibiting very fine power, depth and persistence on the balanced though notably firm finish. Denis Bachelet in his cellar in Gevrey Chambertin

About Domaine Denis Bachelet

This cult status Domaine is not your typical Burgundian wine story. Denis Bachelet is not a 12th-generation winemaker who took over the family’s fully operational domaine. In fact, Denis didn’t even grow up in France - he grew up in Belgium! But nothing could stop him from returning to his grandparents’ small 1.8-hectare vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin when he was 18 years old to start a career in winemaking.

It wasn’t lucrative (or easy) at first. His grandparents had retired a decade prior, and Denis started from scratch without a cellar or equipment. A serendipitous meeting with importer Becky Wasserman introduced him to prominent wine writers like Hugh Johnson, Jancis Robinson, and Clive Coates. Critic reviews catapulted this one-man-show to the top of collector-worthy Burgundy with laud including “nobody makes Charmes-Chambertin like Denis Bachelet” (Neil Martin, WA)

Even his Village level wines have been described in the Wine Advocate as, “the best [v]illage-cru that I have ever tasted” (NM). If you have the opportunity to acquire one of his prized bottlings, you can expect a distinct style that’s built on power, concentrated flavors, and textural richness, thanks to his old vines and judicious use of new oak.
