Reviews 92 points Wine Advocate "Exhibiting aromas of cherries, smoky berries, loamy soil, spices and potpourri, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and charming, with fine depth at the core, lively acids and a sapid finish. (WK)" 94 points Vinous "Dark, bright-rimmed ruby. Incisive, spice-accented red and blue fruit and allspice scents show excellent clarity and pick up floral and smoky mineral flourishes with air. Juicy and alluringly sweet, offering vibrant black raspberry, boysenberry and five-spice powder flavors that deepen through the midpalate. Shows impressive energy and finishes seamless and impressively long, with discreet tannins and a strong echo of juicy red fruit. (JR)"

Jean Foillard of Beaujolais with old vines in Morgon and Fleurie

About Jean Foillard

As a winemaker, Jean Foillard is known for producing exceptional Gamay wines that break the mold of traditional Beaujolais. He has earned a reputation as the Morgon Master and Fleurie's finest, but we refer to him as Beaujolais' Benchmark.

Located at the peak of Cote du Py, the most famed slope in Morgon, Jean Foillard's family vineyards are considered some of the best terroirs in Beaujolais. He has also expanded his holdings into Fleurie's top lieux dits: Grille-Midi and La Madone. The combination of prime terroir and Jean's winemaking techniques results in truly exceptional wines.

At Jean Foillard, the winemaking process is focused on showcasing the unique character of the terroir and the grapes. The grapes are hand-harvested at the peak of ripeness, and are carefully sorted to ensure only the best grapes are used. The grapes are then fermented using native yeasts, and are fermented with whole clusters, which adds complexity and depth to the wines. Once the fermentation is completed, the wines are aged in neutral oak barrels for an extended period, allowing the wines to develop and gain complexity. Jean Foillard believes in minimal intervention, and the wines are bottled unfiltered and without any chaptalization or sulfur addition, thus preserving the natural character of the grapes and the terroir.
