About Chateau Latour

Château Latour, located at the southern edge of Pauillac in Bordeaux, is one of the oldest and most renowned wine producers in the region. With a history dating back to the 14th century, the estate has consistently produced exceptional wines that have earned worldwide recognition.

The vineyard holdings of Château Latour encompass 96.5 hectares of vines, predominantly planted with 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. The prized 47-hectare L'Enclos vineyard surrounding the estate is considered to have some of the finest terroir in Bordeaux and is the sole source of grapes for the grand vin.

The advantageous location of the vineyard near the Gironde Estuary and the deep gravelly soils contribute to the unique character of Château Latour wines. The estuary moderates the climate, protecting the vines from winter frost and excessive summer heat. The deep gravel allows the Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen perfectly, while the clay subsoil helps the vines during periods of drought.

Château Latour has a long-standing commitment to sustainable viticulture and has embraced organic and biodynamic practices. Certified organic in 2018, the estate has been implementing biodynamic farming on 60 hectares of vines, aiming to become entirely biodynamic. The focus on sustainability and agroecology allows Château Latour to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change and preserve the unique terroir expression.

In terms of winemaking, Château Latour employs a meticulous approach. Vinification takes place in 89 temperature-controlled, stainless-steel vats of varying sizes within the gravity-fed winery. The grand vin is aged in 100% new French oak, while the second wine, Les Forts de Latour, rests in a mix of new and old oak. Racking is performed by candlelight, emphasizing their extreme attention to detail.

The wines of Château Latour are renowned for their consistency, concentration, and purity of fruit. While they can be austere in their youth, they develop complexity and allure with age. Notes of cassis, earth, truffle, spice, and tobacco intermingle, creating layers of flavor and elegance. The best vintages have exceptional aging potential and can effortlessly age for a century.

Château Latour's wines are highly sought after and are particularly notable for their ability to excel in challenging vintages. The estate's annual production ranges from around 7,500 to 9,000 cases. Since 2012, Château Latour has chosen not to participate in the en primeur system, instead releasing its wines when they are deemed ready to drink.

Château Latour represents the epitome of Bordeaux winemaking, offering wines that are powerful, concentrated, and capable of aging gracefully. With its rich history, exceptional vineyard holdings, and commitment to sustainable practices, Château Latour continues to produce wines of unparalleled quality and distinction.
