About Chateau Trotanoy

In the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux lies the esteemed Château Trotanoy, a wine estate prized for its unique terroir and exceptional winemaking style. The estate, owned by the prominent Moueix family since 1953, shares a portfolio and stylistic kinship with the acclaimed Château Pétrus.

Trotanoy's 7.2-hectare vineyard is a study in contrast and complexity. 90% is planted with Merlot, and the remaining 10% with Cabernet Franc. The vineyard is divided into two primary soil types. At higher elevations, the soil is a mixture of gravel and clay, shifting to predominantly clay as the altitude decreases. In the subsoil, layers of red gravel and machefer, an iron-rich hardpan, add depth and power to the wines. The vineyard's unique micro-climate, warmer than its neighbors due to its elevated gravel slopes, necessitates an earlier harvest, with the gravel soils being picked first, followed by the clay soils.

A testament to the estate's meticulous vinification process is the use of small concrete vats for fermentation and French oak barrels for aging, spanning between 18 to 20 months. This nuanced approach, coupled with the vineyard's complex soil composition and an average vine age of 35 years, some exceeding 60 years, creates a wine of profound depth, rich concentration, and exceptional aging potential.

Château Trotanoy's Grand Vin, produced in a limited annual quantity of about 2,250 cases, is a highly coveted wine, sought after for its remarkable complexity and capacity to age gracefully for over 25 years in prime vintages. Alongside the Grand Vin, a second wine, L'Esperance de Trotanoy, is produced in select vintages, sourced from a specific vineyard parcel and declassified lots. It's a testament to the estate's commitment to quality, making Château Trotanoy a cherished addition for wine collectors and connoisseurs alike.
