Reviews 95 points Wine Advocate "The riper and warmer year resulted in a 2015 La Penitencia that was surprisingly fresh but still headier and more aromatic than El Pecado from the same vintage. The grapes were sourced from the Pombeiras vineyard from Guimaro, a vineyard that tends to deliver highly expressive and aromatic wines with heady aromas of violets that often remind me of a Touriga Nacional from Portugal. The palate is juicy with a soft texture and subtle flavors, lifted by the fine minerality and a dry finish. All these wines keep changing in the glass, and they should develop more nuances and further complexity in bottle. 900 bottles. (LG)"

About Raul Perez

Widely acclaimed as a pioneering figure in the Spanish winemaking landscape, Raúl Pérez Pereira has been instrumental in reshaping the perception of Spanish wines. His venture, Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez, has emerged as a reference point for the Bierzo appellation, while his work also spans the appellations of Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra, and Tierra de León.

An advocate of minimal intervention, Pérez pays meticulous attention to each plot's micro-climate, soil type, and grape ripening times. This approach yields wines that express their natural character, which are free from artificial additives and exhibit distinctiveness and longevity. This philosophy imbues each bottle with his unique signature.

Pérez's Albariño for the Sketch hails from the wind-swept, westward-facing vineyards of Rías Baixas. The grapes are harvested late in the season, fermented in seasoned French barrels, and left untouched until bottling the following year. The result is an Albariño with a unique flavor profile and robust acidity.

Among his red wines, the Bierzo Tinto Ultreia De Valtuille stands out. This unique blend, primarily of Mencía, also features Alicante Bouschet, Trousseau, Godello, and Doña Blanca. After fermentation with native yeasts, the blend ages under flor, a veil of wild yeasts, in neutral barrels, resulting in a structured wine with a savory start and a long, fruit-driven finish.

In addition to these, Pérez's Ultreia range explores specific soils across the Bierzo region. The Ultreia Saint Jacques, single-varietal Godello, and La Claudina (a single-vineyard Godello) showcase the richness of their respective soils and demonstrate Pérez's exceptional skill in capturing and conveying terroir expressions.

Pérez's winemaking prowess, coupled with his dedication to innovation and natural processes, has positioned him as an influencer in the global wine community. His commitment to the authentic expression of his grapes makes his wines distinct and a genuine reflection of the land they originate from.
