About Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo is a family-owned winery located in Ghemme in Northern Piedmont. The Arlunno family has been living and farming in the area since the late 15th century, and their strong association with the land and wine is evident in their winemaking philosophy. The winery was established in 1977 by Carlo Arlunno, who expanded the vineyard area and replanted old vineyards. In 1981, Alberto Arlunno took over the reins of the company and invested in the vineyards, cellar structures, and equipment. Since then, Cantalupo has become a well-known producer of Nebbiolo wines, known for their distinctive personality, mineral complexity, and great aging potential.

Ghemme is located in the hills of the Novara province, and Cantalupo has the highest vineyards on this side of the Sesia River, with soils that are varied and complex. The majority of their production is Nebbiolo, but the DOCG also allows the addition of Vespolina and/or Uva Rara, locally known as Bonarda Novarese, at a maximum of 25%. Cantalupo offers several different Ghemme wines, including Cantalupo Anno Primo, Collis Carellae, Collis Breclemae, Signore di Bayard, and fresher and more fruity wines like Carolus, Il Mimo, Primigenia, VillaHorta, and Agamium. Although much of the production is produced from the Nebbiolo vines, there is still great interest in the native Vespolina, as well as in the Greco di Ghemme.

Cantalupo's winemaking philosophy is based on a deep respect for the land and a commitment to preserving the integrity of the grapes. They practice sustainable viticulture, limiting the use of chemical treatments and relying on organic fertilizers. They also use traditional winemaking techniques, such as long macerations and aging in large Slavonian oak barrels, to preserve the unique character of their grapes. Their wines are distinctive, elegant, and powerful, making them incredibly age-worthy. Cantalupo's wines are very much worth collecting and drinking for those who appreciate the unique character of high-altitude Nebbiolo.
