Reviews 90 points Wine Advocate "Notes of sweet red cherries, herbs and dried flowers introduce the 2017 Blagny 1er Cru La Piece Sous Le Bois, a medium-bodied, succulent wine with a tangy core of fruit, light but chalky tannins and a mouthwatering finish. (WK)"

About Domaine Matrot

Rooted in the heart of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, Domaine Matrot is a family-run wine estate currently managed by the diligent sisters, Adèle and Elsa Matrot. The foundation of their wines' uniqueness lies in their deep respect for the soils and the vines, blending century-old tradition with a modern ecological approach.

Domaine Matrot emphasizes the concept of terroir, reflected through a meticulous viticulture process, which has been organic since 2000. The journey to organic harvests was gradual, stemming from the 1970s shift from chemical fertilizers to organic products. Observant vineyard management techniques, including attentive pruning, debudding, and, if necessary, green harvesting, allow them to control the yields, thus preserving the purity of fruit and the character of the terroir.

The vinification process is just as rigorous. Careful barrel hygiene and temperature control during fermentation ensure quality. Long and calm fermentations, careful selection of lees, and avoiding unnecessary chaptalization maintain the natural balance of the grapes. The wines are matured in oak barrels for 11-12 months, with meticulous redox reactions monitoring determining the bottling date. The resulting wines are robust in character and merit 3-7 years of patience before uncorking.

Domaine Matrot's vineyard holdings, located in Meursault and Blagny, include some peculiarities, one being the production of Blagny premier cru La Piece sous le Bois, a rarity in the region. Their selection ranges from elegant and rich Meursault Perrières, the most authentic expression of Meursault terroir, to complex and full-bodied Volnay-Santenots Premier Cru.

The Blagny La Pièce sous le Bois Premier Cru, with 35-year-old Pinot Noir vines, is noted for its dark, intense fruits, rich tannins, and striking minerality. In contrast, the Volnay Santenots Premier Cru, with 30-year-old Pinot Noir vines, delivers a complex concoction of black fruits accentuated by soft, velvety tannins. The Meursault-Perrières Premier Cru, with 60-year-old Chardonnay vines, is the jewel of Domaine Matrot, offering a harmonious blend of minerality, finesse, and power with a salinity that enlivens the palate.

Together, the Matrot family ensures the preservation of their vinification traditions while crafting wines that unmistakably embody the uniqueness of their terroir.
