About Jacques-Frederic Mugnier
In 1985, when Frédéric Mugnier took over his family’s domaine in Chambolle-Musigny, his family had been working with longtime vineyard tenants and sold their grapes to négociants, leaving the Mugniers out of touch with their terroirs. Frédéric set to change all that. By implementing sustainable farming practices far and above the norm and by building a new winery, he has renewed the prestige to the vineyards and elevated the quality of the wines. And by finally seeing through the end of the Faiveley family’s long-term lease of Clos de la Maréchale, he also tripled the Mugnier holdings to 14 hectares, making him a substantially more serious contender in the appellation.
In the cellars, Frédéric has moved away from the burly style of Pinot Noirs that were in vogue in the 1990s. Instead, he de-stems 100% of his fruit, seeks traditional fermentations on native yeasts, uses a maximum of 25% new oak, and bottles his Pinot Noirs unfined and unfiltered. With the freshness and focus he achieves, it’s no wonder his wines now enjoy full unicorn status.
