Reviews 90-92 points Wine Advocate "The 2018 Vosne-Romanee is showing beautifully, soaring from the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berries, plums and cherries mingled with sweet spices, woodsmoke, grilled squab and rich soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with fine concentration, lively acids and an expansive finish. (WK)"

About Sylvain Cathiard

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is known for producing some of the best red wines in Burgundy. However, obtaining a bottle can be difficult. The Domaine has only 4.2 hectares of vines, and only a small fraction is imported into the US.

The Domaine was established in the 1930s by Sylvain's grandfather. Today, it is run by his son Sebastian. Most of their vineyard holdings are in Vosne-Romanee, with their flagship wines coming from exceptional parcels in Aux Malconsorts, Reignots, and Romanee-Saint Vivant. Attention to detail is critical at Domaine Sylvain Cathiard. The team believes that it starts in the vineyard. Once the grapes arrive at the Domaine, they hand sort, fully destem, and use primarily neutral oak barrels to create more terroir-driven wines.

Sebastian's winemaking philosophy is based on minimal intervention. This allows the grapes to express their true terroir characteristics. He ferments his wines in small, open-top wooden vats and ages them in oak barrels, focusing on using only the finest oak from Burgundy's forests. Wine critic Neal Martin of Vinous is a huge fan, describing the wines as "gloriously silky smooth, complex wines," with "intensity and focus."

Sylvain Cathiard's wines are elegant, nuanced, and complex, with a beautiful balance of fruit and acidity. They are known for their silky tannins, rich aromas of red and black fruits, and a subtle hint of spice.
