Reviews 91 points Vinous "The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is very pure and intense on the nose, a melange of black and blueberry fruit infused with pressed violet petals. The oak here is seamlessly integrated. The palate is opulent on the entry with black plum and boysenberry jam. There is a subtle confit element to this Charmes-Chambertin with grippy tannins on the finish that delivers a subtle bitter/sappy edginess. (NM)"

About Domaine Arlaud

Situated in the heart of the Côtes de Nuits, Domaine Arlaud exemplifies dedication to the terroir and a commitment to biodynamic viticulture. The estate's key vineyard holdings are centered around the grand crus of Morey St. Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin, territories renowned for their capacity to produce exceptional wines.

The estate is headed by Cyprien Arlaud, whose relentless pursuit for quality and authenticity is palpable in every facet of the winemaking process. He embarked on a biodynamic journey in 1997, eventually earning the estate's certification in 2014. Deeply respecting the health of the soil, Cyprien utilizes horse-plowing techniques to avoid unnecessary compaction - a testament to his meticulous care for the land. His sister Bertille, a premier horse trainer in France, contributes significantly to this cause.

The winemaking process at Domaine Arlaud is marked by minimal intervention. Cyprien's signature approach is founded on promoting elegance and a clear expression of terroir. Extraction levels are consciously kept low and the use of new oak barrels is strategically limited. Fermentation occurs on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled cement tanks. The upper echelon wines may see a maximum of 30% whole cluster inclusion, dependent on vintage conditions and the ripeness of the stems.

One striking example of Domaine Arlaud's exceptional craftsmanship is their Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, a Pinot Noir sourced from vines ranging from 30 to 50 years old. The vineyard location provides a distinct sandy-limestone soil, enhancing the wine's complexity. The wine is aged in French oak barrels (30% new), and the bottling is carried out unfined, unfiltered, and according to the lunar cycle.

Through relentless focus and an insatiable curiosity, Cyprien Arlaud is steadily carving his name amongst the finest winemakers of Burgundy. Domaine Arlaud's wines are a testament to the region's rich wine history and a clear indicator of its vibrant future.
