Reviews 95 points Vinous "Deep, glistening violet. Expansive, spice-tinged black raspberry, cherry cola, licorice and potpourri aromas are complemented by a strong mineral topnote. Youthfully chewy and focused on the palate, offering concentrated yet lively black and blue fruit liqueur, succulent herb and violet pastille flavors and building spiciness. Finishes with repeating floral and dark fruit character, supple, well-knit tannins and outstanding, mineral- and spice-driven tenacity. (JR)" 94 points John Gilman "...offering up a superb bouquet of sweet dark berries, pomegranate, stony soil tones, graphite, cigar smoke, lovely spice tones and just a touch of upper register botanicals from both the whole clusters and the Trousseau and Garnacha Tintorera in the blend. On the palate the wine is pure, refined, full-bodied and extremely promising, with an excellent core of fruit, great mineral drive and focus, ripe, well-integrated tannins and a long, nascently complex and beautifully balanced finish. About Raul Perez
An advocate of minimal intervention, Pérez pays meticulous attention to each plot's micro-climate, soil type, and grape ripening times. This approach yields wines that express their natural character, which are free from artificial additives and exhibit distinctiveness and longevity. This philosophy imbues each bottle with his unique signature.
Pérez's Albariño for the Sketch hails from the wind-swept, westward-facing vineyards of Rías Baixas. The grapes are harvested late in the season, fermented in seasoned French barrels, and left untouched until bottling the following year. The result is an Albariño with a unique flavor profile and robust acidity.
Among his red wines, the Bierzo Tinto Ultreia De Valtuille stands out. This unique blend, primarily of Mencía, also features Alicante Bouschet, Trousseau, Godello, and Doña Blanca. After fermentation with native yeasts, the blend ages under flor, a veil of wild yeasts, in neutral barrels, resulting in a structured wine with a savory start and a long, fruit-driven finish.
In addition to these, Pérez's Ultreia range explores specific soils across the Bierzo region. The Ultreia Saint Jacques, single-varietal Godello, and La Claudina (a single-vineyard Godello) showcase the richness of their respective soils and demonstrate Pérez's exceptional skill in capturing and conveying terroir expressions.
Pérez's winemaking prowess, coupled with his dedication to innovation and natural processes, has positioned him as an influencer in the global wine community. His commitment to the authentic expression of his grapes makes his wines distinct and a genuine reflection of the land they originate from.
