Reviews 93-95 points Vinous "...has a complex bouquet with lemon verbena, Clementine, hints of almond and hazelnut, and crushed stone coming through with time. The palate is well-balanced with a wonderful, slightly pithy texture and very good use of extract. It is slightly creamy but delivers a touch of spice on the refined finish. A sleek and composed Les Charmes. (NM)" 92-94 points Burghound "A more restrained, and more complex, nose requires aggressive swirling to reveals its aromas of spiced apple, ripe pear compote and cool citrus wisps. Once again there is a gorgeous mouthfeel to the dense and stony medium-bodied flavors that exhibit outstanding length on the balanced and nicely dry finale. This could use more depth but the potential is clearly here. Outstanding. (AM)"

Charles Ballot of Domaine Ballot-Millot in his cellar

About Ballot-Millot & Fils

Domaine Ballot-Millot is based in Meursault and is known for producing some of Burgundy's best white wines. The estate is owned by Charles Ballot, a 17th-generation winemaker who took over from his father in 2000. His aim was to improve the quality of the wines and put his own stamp on the winemaking process. He reduced yields, moved away from chemical treatments to natural ones, and introduced a sorting table in the vineyards to work more precisely in the cellar.

Domaine Ballot-Millot is comprised of 10 hectares of vineyards, with seven of those hectares located in Meursault. The vineyards contain old vines, with some being 70+ years old. The estate is privileged to possess holdings in five Premier Crus in Meursault, including Perrières and Charmes, Genevrières, Bouchères, and Poruzots. They also have small 1er Cru holdings in the villages of Chassagne, Volnay, Pommard, and Beaune.

Harvest at the estate is all done by hand, and fermentations take place with indigenous yeasts. The winery aims to encourage finesse and delineation over sheer power, with the white wines seeing only 10-20% new oak and raised without battonage. They are aged 12 months in barrel and then racked to tank for an additional six months of refinement. The reds are 100% de-stemmed, with gentle extractions and relatively short cuvaisons.

Domaine Ballot-Millot produces wines that tend toward the Roulot school of Meursault, more tensile and racy, as opposed to the fatter, honeyed, and nutty style of wines that dominated the landscape 20-30 years ago. The terroir-delineation is excellent, given the exceptional range of 1er Crus and lieux-dits that Ballot has in his arsenal.

The estate offers an exceptional opportunity to access top-level quality and pedigree for a relative value compared to the price one finds at the most coveted estates. The wines are unique and noteworthy, with a concentration of flavors, minerality, and complexity that make them worth collecting and drinking. Overall, Domaine Ballot-Millot is a must-try for Burgundy lovers who appreciate finesse, elegance, and the expression of terroir in their wines.
