Charles Van Canneyt is a highly esteemed winemaker and a rising star of Burgundy, known for his exceptional wines produced under his own label as well as his role as head winemaker at the renowned Domaine Hudelot-Noellat in Chambolle-Musigny. While vineyards in Burgundy have become increasingly expensive, Charles has overcome this challenge by establishing a network of trusted growers from whom he sources the finest grapes. This approach, similar to that of esteemed winemaker Lalou Bize-Leroy, has enabled Charles to secure the best grapes for his winemaking endeavors.
Once a relationship with a grower is established, Charles provides his specifications and closely monitors the vineyard throughout the growing season until harvest. The grower then carries out the necessary processes, such as pressing the white grapes or managing the maceration and vatting period for the red grapes. Charles personally collects the must or wine and takes it to his own cellar for maturation. This hands-on approach ensures that the resulting wines maintain the pure and terroir-driven style associated with Domaine Hudelot-Noellat.
Charles employs French oak barrels for the maturation of his wines, with around 15% new oak used for premier crus, allowing for a gentle oak influence that highlights the unique terroir. Production of premier crus is limited to just two barrels per year, while more Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are produced. Grand crus receive even more meticulous attention, with only one to two barrels crafted per vintage.
